Lazarus' untimely death points up the impossibility of predicting, planning, or controlling what's coming. Even kings try this and fail.
Henry IV, king of England during the early 1400s, wanted more than anything else to lead a crusade to the Holy Land to recapture Jerusalem from the Turks. Since the threats to his throne from internal feuding made it seem impossible that he would realize this ambition, he was encouraged when a soothsayer told him he would die only in Jerusalem.
