A leader in an Israeli pacifist organization told me recently he was embarrassed at the pride many Jews have in their recent wars and victories past (very past) and present. He was referring to the thought expressed here of the destruction of the Egyptians at the Exodus. According to their interpretation, it was an act of God avenging their enemies and saving "his people/Israel." As the Egyptians wickedly took counsel to slay the newborn babes of the Israelites, so, in requital, their own first-born sons were slain, and their hosts drowned in the Red Sea, led by a babe (Moses) who was rescued from the water.
