Leonora Howard King as a child desperately wanted to be a doctor. But in the mid 1800s, women were not allowed in Canadian medical schools. So Leonora enrolled in the University of Michigan's department of medicine and surgery. She graduated "with honor" in 1876. One year later, Leonora sailed to Shanghai as a member of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society.
In Shanghai, Leonora opened a hospital for Chinese women and children. Leonora married missionary Rev. Alexander King, left the WFMS and built another hospital. Over the next 47 years, Leonora treated thousands of women and children without a thought of payment. She was awarded the Imperial Order of the Double Dragon by Empress Dowager for her work during the Sino-Japanese war.
Leonora's life was not easy -- many obstacles and foes stood in her way. But she was steadfast to complete the work the Lord set before her. Leonora is further testimony of the Lord standing by God's people as they fight the good fight.
