Light is a constant reminder...
Illustration
Light is a constant reminder of God throughout scripture. Of course the absence of light is darkness, and darkness is usually associated with evil. When God lives within us, we have a light that will last, a light that cannot be overcome by darkness.
Architects are always searching for the perfect plan, the perfect set of angles that will produce the perfect building and town and city. This perfect city will always be comfortable and people will live lives that reflect the perfect nature of the builder's design. Of course we know this is highly unlikely to ever take place, because perfection is only found in God. The perfect angles of design cannot be produced by human hands, but they can be reproduced by imagination, indeed a vision from God.
John sees the perfect city. It is a place not built with human hands, but a place within God's hands. There is no need to worry about darkness because all is light in God's presence. There is no more sea to separate people from one another and every river flows from God nurturing the world for all. The vision leads us to trust God with all we are, to experiment with a faith that says God will not abandon us.
