The Lord told me.... That's...

"The Lord told me...." That's a favorite line by many pastors and especially televangelists.
It's often followed by a plea for money. That's a shame because it has happened so many
times that the whole idea that God speaks to people has become implausible to many. In
fact, it seems almost childish to believe God has spoken to you.
So how does God speak to people today? Or does God speak to people today?
Karen, the wife of a pastor in Ohio, knows God speaks to her. It's usually through dreams. She writes them down in the morning. Then she prays over them and usually sends them to her good Christian friend who has exhibited the gift of interpretation. Between them and the Holy Spirit, there has been a clear and progressive revelation of God to Karen. Sometimes it's about things concerning her family or friends. Often, the dreams are about the church where her husband is the pastor. Her husband has seen this gift enough times that when Karen shares a dream with him about the church, he takes it very seriously.
When her dream had to do with a major decision he had to make about whether the church should hire an additional pastor, he listened. Following God's direction through her, he recommended to the church that they postpone the hiring by at least a year. A year later, when they did hire they had a much clearer vision of how that pastor would be most effective in ministry at the church.
