Every generation has had its share of self-proclaimed seers and prophets who have claimed some unique capacity to see in the events of their time a warning of the impending Parousia or Second Coming of the Lord. Some are misguided and biblically illiterate zealots (e.g. Jehovah's Witnesses). Others are out-and-out manipulative charlatans whose scare tactics are designed to give them power and money (e.g. "Rev." Jim Jones).
