One of my Mohawk Indian friends told me about a certain woman who aspired to the honored position of Clan Mother. Among nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, a clan mother has great responsibility to aid and counsel chiefs. She may even depose a chief who acts contrary to the people's interests. "No one," said my friend, "should aspire to such power and responsibility." Clan mothers do not select themselves. They are chosen.
