The majestic saguaro cactus with arms outstretched is an impressive sight for travelers in Southern Arizona. What travelers might not realize is that these thirty- to forty-foot cacti are 100 to 200 years old. One who plants a saguaro needs incredible patience because a ten-year-old cactus may only be an inch or two high. In thirty years the cactus may only be knee high. After 75 years the cactus begins to develop its "arms." In the span of an average human life, a saguaro cactus may only develop through its adolescence. The cactus grows slowly, but it grows as it can in its environment.
