Many of the old Negro...

Many of the old Negro spirituals that we sing, "Michael Row The Boat Ashore," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and others, were originally coded freedom songs of American slaves. The lyrics contained messages about impending escapes to freedom. The journeys of which they sang were not only about spiritual freedom, but freedom of body as well. The soothing melodies of the songs did not free them from slavery, but provided a healing of sorts through the singing with and to one another. They served one another in love. -- Kelly
