On May 18, 1980, at 8:32 a.m. on a Sunday morning, Mount St. Helens became a mountain of death. The north face of the mountain blew off; an avalanche of rock left 230 square miles of forest dead. All the people and landscape of eastern Washington state were shrouded in ash, as a sheet of gray darkened the daytime sky.
