The members of St. Luke's had worshiped in the basement of the church for over 10 years. That was because when they started building the church, a division split the congregation, and construction was abruptly halted. All that had been completed was the concrete basement. The remaining members covered the floor joists with shingles, finished the basement, and worshiped there until they could again grow the congregation and finish the project.
