Michael Kirwan, a 52-year-old Washington, D.C., man, has given his life to befriending and helping the destitute. In 1978, while a graduate student at George Washington University, he allowed a street beggar to stay in his dormitory room for some thirty days. Since then, he has fetched food and medicine for the despised and destitute, taken them on errands, or sometimes just befriended them. He will not insure his own health, because the poor, whom he helps, do not have such insurance, and he would rather use the funds to help them.
