Mladen Cerovic, a retired police chief and pillar of his community of Orahovac, Yugoslavia, in the summer of 1998, saved five of his Albanian neighbors from execution by Serbian police. Cerovic, a 70-year-old Orthodox Christian Serb, is a hero to his Muslim neighbors who had been dragged out of their homes as suspected terrorists. They were up against a wall, and the police had already released the safeties on their machine guns, when Cerovic, in the name of God and St. Sava, a 13th-century churchman venerated by Serbs, begged the police not to open fire.
