Most people are familiar with the tale of the British ship, Bounty, and of its mutineers, Fletcher Christian, John Adams, and others. After the mutiny the nine fleeing sailors landed on Pitcairn Island in 1790, bringing with them 18 Tahitians. Within a few years all the men except John Adams were dead from violent battles among themselves. In 1808, an American ship stopped at the island and found an elderly John Adams ruling the island's peaceful inhabitants.
