Most people would say that bicycle racing is an individual sport. One athlete alone on a machine trying to outpedal every other cyclist on the road. But looks can be deceiving. The truth is that no bike racer can expect to win a three-week grand tour without a strong team. Even the best cyclist needs teammates to pace them up the climbs, shield them from the winds on the flats, and shuttle food and water up from the team car.
When Lance Armstrong won his fourth Tour de France, he was asked how he was able to accomplish this feat that no other American had achieved. His first comments were that he couldn't have won without his team. Lance Armstrong took no credit for himself; he gave credit first to his teammates on the U.S. Postal Service team.
Paul expresses much the same attitude in this passage from 2 Corinthians. It is not himself or his own efforts, accomplishments or abilities he preaches about, but only Jesus Christ as Lord.
