In the movie Sophie's Choice, Meryl Streep plays the part of a woman who is haunted by the memory of what happened to her while imprisoned by the Nazis during the Second World War. Particularly she remembers the time she was forced to choose life for herself or life for her child.
In choosing to live, she decided for the death of her child. The guilt she experiences from that choice in her past torments her present and threatens her future. Only death sets her free.
