The Beatitudes are not prescriptions for how to live a Godly life. They are descriptions of how a Godly life should look. Indeed they are radical descriptions. A Godly life is meek, merciful, pure, peace-making.
Quite the opposite of the description secular society would make of a "successful" person! In George Bernard Shaw's play Candida, a certain Mr. Burgess is described as:
