Music critics have heralded Requiem as the most outstanding of Brahms' works in bringing together all the elements of his artistic ability. During his career Brahms was criticized considerably for his work that reflected the contributions of his predecessors rather than the school of romantics led by Richard Wagner. However, his students since have been able to point out that Brahms demonstrated considerable individuality and ingenuity. Some of that is reflected in the Requiem. What is most significant is that Brahms gave a completely new character to the requiem.
