My father always had a good sense of humor and he always had a backyard garden, too. I discovered his creative concern for me, not at the time, but long after he had taught me how to grow a garden and make it worthwhile.
As the vegetables began to poke up from the earth, we had to pull out the weeds. At harvest time, we had to gather radishes and onions and lettuce. We had planted all these things, and we had tended them as they grew; now we would harvest them, too.
