My father went only to the sixth grade. He didn't read much, just The Ohio Farmer and the front page of the daily newspaper. He didn't write much either, just his signature on the notes at the bank when he was borrowing money to buy a truck.
He was a coal miner earlier in life, and then he was a farmer. I used to follow along behind him as he plowed the cornfield early in May. Round and round he went with the single plow pulled by his team of horses, Kit and Nell.
