My grandfather was a lumber...

My grandfather was a lumber man in South Carolina in the 1920s. He began working with mules to haul the lumber out of the swamp. They used cross-cut saws to fell the trees. I loved to ask him about life in those days because it always sounded rugged. He told me once he got the contract to cut a large stand of cypress and pine in a particularly low part of the state. He and his crew would have to work hard to get the timber out before the spring flooding.
