Naomi was perhaps a very conventional Israelite woman -- she saw her place as being with her people and her worth as a woman centered in having a husband and bearing sons. Her husband was gone and she could no longer bear sons, so it did not make sense to her that Ruth, a woman of Moab, should want to stay with her. She could offer her nothing but friendship, and she did not even seem to comprehend a need for that. Friends are of secondary worth when compared to husband and sons. But Ruth seemed to have a capacity for self-determination: Convention will not make her decision for her.
