Nathaniel Hawthorne long ago wrote the story of "Young Goodman Brown." The central character is a newly married man who is quite convinced that those in his Puritan community and church, including his wife Faith, are without sin. These are deeply faithful people: the preacher, Goodman Brown's catechism teacher, the deacons, his grandfather, Faith, and many others. They are devoted to God in every aspect of their lives. In an evening walk with the devil, Goodman Brown is shown the reality of these lives.
