The mystery of the blue lines was the topic of discussion among the television audience of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Why were blue lines painted on all the ski slopes? The common conclusion was for decoration; but in fact, the lines served a very serious purpose. The vertical lines running up and down the slope marked the outside boundaries of the ski run. The horizontal lines provided depth perception so a skier could gauge the terrain. Why blue? Because it pops out and looks better than the other Olympic colors of red, yellow, and green. This safety feature has always been a part of the winter sport, but in the past it went unnoticed for pine needles were used instead of blue paint.
Paul in his letter to the church in Colossae is pleased that they have been receiving Christian instruction. They have been taught the historic and authoritative tradition of formulated doctrine. Yet, there is a concern as false teaching is circulating within the congregation and some individuals are accepting these unscriptural precepts. Paul writes that it "takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than Christ." The only New Testament reference to philosophy is mentioned by Paul in this letter and his concern of its ability to deceive.
In order to avoid being misled by the teaching of terrorists who teach a false philosophy based on human traditions we need to study the scriptures and be knowledgeable of the doctrines of the church. In essence we need our own blue lines for safety and guidance. We need to know where the boundaries of truth lie and have a depth of understanding of the Bible.
