William Booth had just stepped into the pulpit when members of his Methodist congregation started their vocal protest. They were angry that their pastor continued to invite street people into their sanctuary and church home. These unsavory people belonged elsewhere, but not in their church. Before he could respond his wife Catherine answered for him. She yelled from the first row of the balcony, "Never!" She was telling the congregants they would never stop inviting the homeless and downtrodden into the church. This was one of several incidents that convinced the Booths to leave "fashionable" religion, leading them to the establishment of The Salvation Army.
The Pharisees challenged Jesus for he went against what was considered fashionable religion, for he placed greater emphasis on human need than he did on obedience to the Law. Jesus lived by a higher law that he expressed in the commandment we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. That is why Jesus continued his ministry of healing despite the Pharisees' criticism that he was violating the sabbath.
