An old story tells of a Zen master who is falsely accused by a young village girl of being the father of her child. When the master encounters the accusation, he responds, "Is that so?" The master takes his loss of status and respect in stride, nurturing the child to the best of his ability. After a time the young woman's guilt overcomes her and she recants, naming a young man in the village as the real father. When they bring this news to the master, he responds, "Is this so?" as he returns the child to the family.
