A recent article in The National Geographic (later in Reader's Digest) described the adventures and geography along the 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. From day-hikers to those covering the entire length in one journey (or "yo-yos" -- hiking roundtrip), it is a remarkable story of quiet adventure and stamina. The author tells of witnessing the end of 2,100 miles or five million steps by one hiker at Mount Katahdin in Maine who had begun months before in Georgia. He walked up to the sign marking the finish, touched it, and then went aside to sit quietly alone!
