One of the most memorable plays of our century is Philip Merivale's Death Takes a Holiday, which had a long Broadway run about forty years ago. The plot tells of a mystical figure of Death, who wonders why human beings fear him so greatly. To find out, he makes a deal with a nobleman who has a terminal illness. The nobleman's death will be postponed if he stages a weekend party and allows Death to assume a human form and mingle with the guests. Only the host will know who the stranger really is.
