One of the most powerful works in English literature is Charles Dickens' classic, A Tale of Two Cities. The culmination of the novel, set during the French Revolution, is the decision by Sydney Carton to take the place of Charles Darnay at the guillotine. Carton's act is framed by the recollection of the words of the Twenty-third Psalm and Jesus' statement, "I am the resurrection and the life." Christ's intercession on behalf of humanity alone allows our presence before God. Carton's sacrifice alone permits Darnay to live.
