At one point during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln called for a national "Day of Prayer and Fasting," rather like Joshua called the people together at Shechem to recommit themselves to God. Like Joshua, Lincoln first recounted God's goodness to the nation. Then he challenged Americans to live with a renewed faith. This is what Lincoln wrote: "We have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in number, wealth and power as no other nation ever has grown. But," Lincoln continued, "we have forgotten God.
