For one thousand years, residents of the Isle of Man have gathered in mass at Tynwald Hill on July 5 to hear the reading of laws legislated since the last assembly. Manx Deemsters (judges) sit ceremoniously with other government officials and, at the appointed time, read the laws aloud in both English and Manx. The public assembly, Tynwald Day, is a tradition dating back to the time when the tiny island was ruled by the Vikings.
