Ordination is a historical honor...

Ordination is a historical honor given to persons for particular ministries. The office of Elder, for example, spans both Old and New Testaments. In ordination, someone is set apart through first being called by God, and then God's believing community. Potential elders are tested and questioned before being installed for service. A lot hinges on their ability to give good answers. Not all game shows are created equal. Some generate more respect than others. Jeopardy is a nightly game show that has earned credibility by using a question/answer format. Participants must not only give good answers; they must be absolutely accurate and respond with lightning speed. Giving good answers when put in the spotlight publicly is tough stuff. Who can remember the terror of being called on to answer an obscure history question in high school? Yet, Jesus excelled at giving good answers when put on the spot. He saw beyond a question's fa‡ade to its hidden agenda. Antagonistic questions were hurled at him constantly. What enabled him to give good answers was a thorough knowledge of Scripture. When enticed by the enemy, Jesus responded, "It is written...." People will subtly attack us with questions aimed at discrediting our faith and witness. We can expect to be trapped in words. We can respond and gain respect by giving good answers anchored in Scripture. "Teacher, you have spoken well. For they no longer dared to ask him another question" (v. 40).
