Our 7-year-old cocker...

Our 7-year-old cocker spaniel was accustomed to being on a leash when he was outside. However, late one night, he managed to get off his leash. Before I could react, he had sensed his freedom and had begun to run. Within minutes he had disappeared from view.
I was heartbroken. All I could think about were the dangers that city life held for a dog unused to running free. Five minutes turned into 10. Before we knew it, he had been gone for two hours. All of our efforts to find him had failed. With heavy hearts we shut the door and turned out the light.
And then we heard it. There was a faint whimper at the door and the sound of scratching. We flung open the door and in ran our muddy, skunk-sprayed dog. Before we could catch him he ran across the light gray carpet and jumped up onto our beige couch. With our eyes watering from the smell, we quickly found a towel, wrapped it around him and carried him to the tub.
Our dog had run away from the safety of our home. But when he was hurting he returned home.
