Our church was discussing the Heifer Project, a creative mission that allows people to purchase animals for the needy around the world. By giving animals to people, rather than food, efforts at self-sufficiency are enhanced. It has been said, "If you give people a fish, they eat once. If you teach them to fish, they eat forever." That is the credo of the Heifer Project.
That next Sunday my church participated in the Heifer Project by taking a special spur-of-the-moment offering. We collected enough money to purchase a water buffalo. That gift brings an astonishing number of resources to an impoverished family. The buffalo provides high-protein milk, manure for fertilizer and fuel, and power for plowing. A farmer in Asia can plant four times more rice with a water buffalo than by hand.
