In our nation where Christianity had flourished in the past, it is now troubled both from within and from without. Some of the greatest pressures have been from the affluence and competing forces for the commitment of believers. Dr. Martin Marty commented in one of his end of the year columns on what we have endured in the Christian community. We can smile at what we have survived, but the fact is that the ridiculous sometimes points to how serious the problems have been. We did survive some television evangelists.
