At the outset of his career as a courtier, Sir Walter Raleigh scratched with a diamond the following words on a window of the royal palace: "Fain would I climb, yet fear I to fall." As he hoped she would, Queen Elizabeth I read what he wrote. She completed the couplet: "If thy heart fail thee, climb not at all."
