Over the years a lot of different kinds of machinery has been invented that has greatly simplified and improved the task of woodworking. A great variety of radial arm saws, table saws, band saws, circular saws, and jigsaws have virtually replaced the handsaw. The joiner and the router have improved on the carpenter's plane and the wood chisel. A power lathe has expedited the making of designs. A power drill and a drill press have made the hand drill obsolete.
