One of the ugliest phrases in the language, to me at least is, "Yes, but ..." It is used by people to avoid commitment: " Do you love me?" "Yes, but ..." To avoid taking a firm stand: "Didn't you say...?" "Yes, but ..." To maintain a superior position: "Didn't so-and-so look nice?" "Yes, but ..." It is merely a symbol of our human tendency to hedge our bets, not ever to fully commit ourselves, whether it be to another person, an idea, or a principle.
