The Old Testament Jew considered lepers as total outcasts and treated then in a pretty uncaring and awful manner. Jesus broke through all that by associating with them and healing them. I think it is important to note that Jesus did not associate only with healed lepers, but even with active ones, just as he associated with sinners and taxcollectors even before they changed their ways. We Christians need always to keep this in mind.
