A couple came to the minister to have their son baptized. As they talked together about the meaning of the sacrament, the minister discovered that the parents believed that baptism conferred a name upon their child. He tried to shift their understanding to a more profound aspect of the act. But the parents persisted in their belief.
Finally, the minister said, "Your child already has a name. You gave it to him at birth. You have been calling him by name for several months. Even before he was born you discussed and decided upon a name."
