This passage contains the account of how pride almost kept Naaman, powerful commander of the victorious Syrian forces, from being healed of leprosy. It seems the Israelite prophet Elisha commanded him to bathe himself in the River Jordan. Naaman was a patriotic Syrian. Surely the rivers of his land were as healing as those of the Israelites! And besides, why should a macho Syrian general have to do anything suggested by a wimpy Israelite prophet!
