In this passage, Peter alludes to the saving power of water. In the summer of 1991, a young man named Patrick learned a tragic lesson about the value of water. Patrick, a 40-year-old outdoor enthusiast, attempted to hike 20 miles across the viciously hot Badwater Salt Flats. In an effort to lighten his pack, Patrick brought only 3 quarts of water for the journey, even though most experts would advise at least 12 quarts. Patrick was a healthy 165 pounds when he began his hike, but after 19.5 miles, he had shrunk to 90 pounds.
