Paul chooses strong and vivid...
Illustration
Paul chooses strong and vivid words to picture the heathen way of life: "Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more." And he further pictures this as a result of "the hardening of their hearts."
In the Greek language, Paul's image is even more forceful. The word he uses indicates the "petrifying" of their hearts. Porosis comes from "poros," which originally meant a stone that was harder than marble.
