Paul reminded the Corinthians that he had loved them and served them with everything that he had to offer. What had he received in return? Nothing, apart from the pain of rejection. Paul then challenges them to be vulnerable and open wide their hearts in love. One cannot help but recall the writing of C.S. Lewis when he wrote: "To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal.
