Paul is speaking of Christ: "Though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich."

A Moravian missionary went to the West Indies to preach to the slaves. Arriving, he was gravely distressed that he was unable to reach them with his message, for early each morning they were driven out to the fields and forced to work there until late. Also, these deprived people were suspicious of the missionary because they viewed him as being of a rank above themselves.
