Paul was nearing his rendezvous with death when he wrote 2 Timothy. Paul faced his execution with courage and confidence in Christ's victory over the demons of despair. He closed his words to this beloved disciple and protege, Timothy, with a ringing affirmation of God's glory. Paul had met the risen Christ and trusted in him for his salvation.
Gerard Manley Hopkins, the great English priest and poet of the nineteenth century, captured the same awe Paul felt as he beheld the Lord's majestic rulership of all creation.
