People throughout history have said they wanted peace. So many people have stated their
desire for peace that some conclude peace is a universal longing within the human race.
But humanity has produced few and feeble peaceful ways to generate peace. After the
Roman Empire had destroyed another nation and proclaimed the result "peace," the
Roman historian, Tacitus, quipped, "To plunder, to slaughter, to steal, these things they
misname empire; and where they make a wilderness, they call it peace."
The prophet Micah foresees peace arriving upon earth through the birth of a promised king. He'll be born in Bethlehem, King David's hometown -- other than that an insignificant little village. From the undistinguished village of Bethlehem came the promised king who brought peace in what the apostle Paul would call the foolish way of weakness. Jesus didn't conquer people with physical force, but died to free them from their sin. Jesus was so consistent in how he produced peace that Paul would even say of Jesus, "For he is our peace." Jesus brought about peace by sacrificing himself, not by destroying others. His means of attaining peace were peaceable. Truly and finally, "the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight."
