Petitions "for kings and all who are in high positions" became the spiritual agenda for an elder in one congregation. Each time he offered public prayers, his thoughts focused on "the President of the United States and all members of Congress." The same elder often became irritated over sermons touching on political matters relating to the poor and the homeless. "Why preach about nobodies?" he once asked.
