In Philip E. Slater's classic book, Microcosm, the first chapter deals with the observation that people in groups (and the author's contention is even the smallest group is but a "microcosm" of the world at large), often feel deprived, empty, confused. To combat these feelings, groups will often deify the leader, fantasizing that the leader will take care of them and give meaning to their lives. If the leader does not live up to his or her deification, the group will rebel (as has to be the case, since no human being is perfect).
