Philosopher Philip Hallie has told the story of the French village, Le Chambon, in his book, Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed. From 1940 until the end of the war, this village of 3,500 residents saved the lives of some 6,000 Jewish refugees in the face of the Nazi occupation. However, these villagers were not typical in their role in the French resistance. Many were Huguenots and Quakers whose ancestors had experienced persecution during the Reformation. They believed that God's embodiment in Jesus was an act of sacrificial love and that all persons are precious to God in this way.
